第一場: Shakespeare, King Lear and Aging
(2) 講題：Shakespeare, King Lear and Aging
- 日期：2016年11月24日 (星期四) 12:40-13:50
Shakespeare’s King Lear represents the tensions between an aging king and his three daughters as well as his court and kingdom. Is he mad? Should he divide his kingdom for his three daughters in life or would it have been better to leave the fate of his family and country to the aftermath of his death? Lear also plays favourites, a difficult strategy that backfires, and his is subject to elder abuse, something that is a problem today. People treat him a certain way because he is old. In the parallel subplot, Gloucester, and his sons play out the drama of the delusion, abuse and vulnerability that age is subject to. The health of Lear and Gloucester affects their families and their estate and country and vice versa.
